When we started McDowell Mountain Cycles, we decided to do a lot of things differently than a lot of bike shops. We recycle over three times as much as we throw away and we decided to allocate space to create a hangout for riders because we wanted to create something bigger than just a place to buy stuff.
But we also went deep in apparel. Most bike shops don’t do that. They say it doesn’t sell and they know this because at one point they had a few offerings and they didn’t sell and that was their market research and the only apparel that sells in bike shops are black shorts, hi-vis jerseys and their shop kit.
We disagreed and you know why? Because what’s the alternative? Online? Buying apparel online stinks. Not because we’re a brick and mortar store and the internet is evil, but because you can never know things like the true color, size, cut and feel of an item from looking at a computer screen and reading online reviews. It’s not a Dura Ace crankset. They’re not all the same. And we didn’t like finding out days later that the item we ordered wouldn’t work and then have to ship it back and start the process over.
We thought others might value the shopping experience and their time like we do. And you know what? We were right. When you’re ready for that next piece of riding gear, stop in and try a bunch of stuff on. You’ll find more than a couple of sad jerseys and janky shorts. We know you’ll find something you love.
