Each month, we select a jersey from our wall at MMC and tell it’s story and background. This month, the featured jersey is the MMC/Qhubeka Cape Epic jersey.
The Cape Epic is perhaps the most famous mountain bike race in the world. It is held each year in the mountains of the southern cape of South Africa near Cape Town. The race is eight days long and covers a distance of over 400 miles with 40,000+ feet of climbing. The race attracts professional and serious amateur riders that participate in two person teams. All in all, it is EPIC.
In 2016, MMC’s Harry Johnson and his daughter, Heidi, teamed up to compete in the race. The father/daughter team also raced funds for Qhubeka, a part of the World Bicycle Relief’s efforts to provide bikes to those in need in South Africa. True to the MMC moto, “that we believe that bicycles change lives”, Harry and Heidi completed the Cape Epic and came away with a lasting respect for the race and the country and people of South Africa. Their jersey hangs proudly on our MMC wall.
